SanDisk Extreme 1TB: give your big projects somewhere to go
Photos, video and finished projects can outgrow a laptop surprisingly quickly. A portable drive is useful when you know which files it will carry—and where the second copy will live.

Give the drive one clear job
A portable SSD becomes easier to use when its purpose is obvious. It could carry current video projects, hold a local photo copy, or move a large folder to another computer. Those are related jobs, but they are not identical.
If you move the only copy of a project from the laptop onto the drive, you have changed its location, not created a backup. Keep a second copy somewhere separate and check that you can open it. That habit matters more than the shape of the case.
Match this generation and capacity
The selected Amazon listing is the 1TB SDSSDE61 generation, described there as the older Extreme model. SanDisk also sells other Extreme and Extreme PRO versions. Do not use a newer model’s headline speed to judge this one.
SanDisk lists USB 3.2 Gen 2 for the SDSSDE61 family. Your computer’s port, the cable, the files and the task all affect transfer behaviour. If the laptop only offers a slower connection, a different logo on the drive will not make that connection faster.
A quick capacity exercise
Look at the folders you plan to put on it and add their current sizes. Then allow room for the next project and ordinary growth. A folder labelled “video” is not a useful capacity estimate; its actual size is.
Do not plan around filling every last advertised byte. Available formatted space differs from the number on the box, and editing applications may need their own working space. If choosing 1TB already feels like a squeeze, compare the right larger capacity before ordering.
Keep the useful parts simple
Label the drive and give the top-level folders plain names. Use your operating system’s safe removal process, keep the cable with it, and check the manufacturer’s current support and firmware guidance for the exact model. It is a storage device that deserves care, not a promise against every kind of loss.
The best fit is someone with a clear file-moving or local-copy routine. If you mainly want photos to appear on a family frame, start with the frame’s supported upload method instead. If your issue is the laptop connection, our USB-C checklist can help you avoid buying the wrong adapter alongside the drive.
