DrawerStore Compact: more room beside the cutlery, if the drawer is tall enough

Stacking forks and spoons at an angle is a clever way to use a narrow drawer. Just measure the height before falling for the smaller footprint.

Trade width for height

DrawerStore Compact uses angled, overlapping compartments rather than spreading all the cutlery flat. That is the useful idea: leave room beside the forks and spoons for something else.

Joseph Joseph specifies a minimum drawer height of 8cm, or 3¼ inches. Treat that as a starting requirement, then check your actual cutlery and the way the drawer closes. A clever footprint is not helpful if a handle catches on the cabinet above.

Try the height with the cutlery in place

Measure the usable drawer interior, including the lowest obstruction above it. Then picture your longest knives and tallest spoon handles sitting at an angle. The tray’s outside height is not the only thing that occupies that space.

If the fit is close, compare the maker’s complete dimensions and your utensils before ordering. Leave a comfortable margin rather than treating the minimum clearance as a target. Our storage-fit checklist is useful for noting the drawer and the objects together.

Will everyone find things easily?

The organiser uses cutlery icons to identify the compartments. That can help when the working ends of the utensils are not displayed in the same way as a flat tray. Think about the people who use the drawer, not just the person arranging it.

Keep a simple order and do not overfill the compartments. If someone has to lift several items to find the right one, use fewer pieces or choose a different layout. Saving width is a useful trade only if the everyday action stays easy.

Compact tray or room for bigger tools?

This is the small cutlery organiser, not the broader DrawerStore versions with extra utensil and gadget spaces. Match the exact model and material on the offer; the bamboo and larger versions are separate choices.

For a drawer that also holds serving tools, the larger expandable OXO organiser may make more sense. For a narrow drawer full of everyday flatware, the compact Joseph Joseph has a clear purpose. Choose the arrangement that makes breakfast easier rather than the one that wins a before-and-after photograph.
